The Logo
Creating the podcast logo was a joint-effort between my husband, Jimmy and I. I've always wanted to try the art of block printing, and this logo seemed like the perfect first project!

After drafting many different sketches, we decided on an image that felt iconic to any Philmont staffer. A cabin, a mesa, tall ponderosa pines, and the hint of a moon.

We wanted the logo to emulate nature and hence offer an imperfect, yet bold feel. We also hoped for a somewhat fluid, living piece of artwork - so we left it open to customizable options such as adding stars, or lines in the sky for those foggy morning clouds.

The basic process:
-
Sketch image onto linoleum block
-
Sharpen tools
-
Carve
-
Select paper
-
Ink print

Carving took many hours, but it was meditative in a reductive way. In order to keep the fine details, we had to carve away more than we initially realized. The cabin window "notch" for example, was a challenge. Ink printing turned out to be tricky as well. It was trial and error to find the perfect combination of amount of ink, applied pressure, and type of paper.

On the 100th try or so... we did it!

Once we had a clear, crisp, block printed image, we scanned and uploaded it to utilize in a digital format.

Jimmy recently inherited a set of carving tools from his great-great uncle, dating back to the early 1900's. We used these tools (as well as modern day tools) to carve the logo, making us feel connected to history and family, much like Philmont does.

From start to finish, we created a logo suited for Silver On the Sage Podcast.
